Press release - Sept. 14, 2007

The next general elections will likely be one of the most significant for Jamaica over the decades since Independence. The Jamaica Debates Commission, a partnership between the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce and the Media Association of Jamaica Ltd., is now in the process of planning for the staging of prime-time, nationally broadcast political debates in the period leading up to the elections. The debates will be aired live on radio and television.

The Jamaica Debates Commission was established in early 2002, as a non-profit organization, made up of representatives of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce and the Media Association of Jamaica Ltd. The primary aim of the Commission is to facilitate sober dialogue, necessary to assist the Jamaican electorate in making informed decisions.

Both partners in the Commission are of the view that by staging a series of properly organized, fair, dispassionate and civil debates that focus on the issues of major concern to Jamaicans across the political spectrum, we would do a service to the many citizens who wish to see beyond political partisanship.

Letters have already been sent to the political parties inviting their participation and general interest has been shown. Consultative and planning sessions are already in train. The public will be kept informed of developments related to the staging of these debates as we move forward.
